New Wildwoods Exhibits

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Wildwoods, Fernbank Forest

The Fernbank Natural History Museum is a hidden gem tucked away in midtown Atlanta. When I ask my Woodstock, GA, neighbors if they have been, most say no but they have heard of it and would love to go someday. My family loves exploring our current hometown and state, and the Fernbank has been on our shortlist since we discovered it after moving here three years ago.

On our first visit we were in awe of the beauty of the building and entrance as you drove onto the property (read more here) and we were soon even more in awe as we entered the museum itself and explored the Fernbank Forest, a.k.a. Wildwoods, for the first time.

If you live anywhere near Atlanta and have kids (or not) this place needs to be on your list of day trip things to do! There is so much to experience and see both inside and out, and THIS spring and summer their latest addition to the Wildwoods definitely is worth a visit.
In addition to the eye-popping wood sculptures that are an icon of The Fernbank, the museum has added a new exhibit called Habitat to your nature-walk adventure through the Wildwoods.

Habitat at The Fernbank

Habitat will be on exhibit now through August 29. That gives you plenty of time to plan your late spring or summer-time visit to the Fernbank!

“Explore the stories and science of habitats, and the plants, animals, and humans that call them home in this new outdoor exhibit. The elevated walkway into WildWoods leads guests through a tour of the natural world. Set against the backdrop of a thriving forest found just minutes from the heart of downtown Atlanta, this new exhibit invites guests to travel ‘through’ habitats and biomes found around the globe and explore the importance of preserving these natural communities through large-scale sculptures of animals, nests, flowers and more, created in partnership with local artists.” —Fernbank Museum

Games In the Gallery at The Fernbank

My girls loved learning about some of their favorite creatures’ habitats and so did we. Our next stop at the new outdoor Games in the Gallery. This interactive outdoor game spot is perfect for kids and adults of all ages. It gave us a reason to spend more time outside and we even had the opportunity of teaching our oldest how to play checkers. Meanwhile our youngest enjoyed the hula-hoops and obstacle course. The Games are available through August 29th as well. There’s even a giant chess board for those looking for something more advanced than checkers to play.

Overall every time I visit the Fernbank I’m consistently impressed with their outdoor space. My littles enjoy it as much as I do! This museum is a win-win destination for this Woodstock family.
